          Marciarose Shestack produced documentaries and was host of an interview on WRCV-TV, as Channel 3 was called between 1958 and 1965, during which time the station was owned by NBC.

          Naturally ambitious and knowing what she wanted next, Marciarose approached WRCV’s general manager and told him she wanted to be an anchor or reporter on the station’s newscasts, then defined as two half-hour shows, one at 6:30 p.m., the other at 11.

          The answer was clear.

          “He told me, ‘A woman will do news over my dead body. Women are not authority figures, they do not have good voices,'” Marciarose said by telephone as we talked about the Governor’s Award she was given by the local chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) at its annual Emmy Award ceremony last week.
